Poipu Bay Golf Course
Course yardage from 7123 to 5241
Slope ratings from 73.9 to 70.9
A Robert Trent Jones Jnr, designed layout, Poipu will be our opening course in the Hawaii 2018 Kauai Golf Classic. The course is laid out on an expansive 210-acre section on the oceanfront with excellent views and many holes running the length of the Oceanside.
From 1994 to 2006, Poipu Bay was home to the Grand Slam of Golf – one of the toughest PGA tours to qualify for. Established in 1979, the four major winners from the previous year were invited to compete in a 36-hole stroke play championship for a very lucrative purse.
2017-2018 Golf Digest has rated Poipu in its 12th best course in Hawaii. Recognised as the course where the ‘champions play’ Poipu plays as an open-links style course, which is set above dramatic sea cliffs and the Makawehi Bluff. 85 bunkers but only 5 water hazards, along with wildly varying trade winds – this will be a great, intriguing and spectacular course to start our Hawaii 2018 Kauai Golf Classic on. Look out for the par 4, 16th – dubbed by Jones as the ‘Pebble Beach of the Pacific’.
Last thought - you should know, as you manage your way around the 18-holes that the course is home to many significant historical sites, designed around several ancient Hawaiian heiau (places of worship). It is not uncommon to see humpback whales spouting offshore …!
Puakea Golf Course
Course yardage from 6954 to 5225
Slope ratings from 73.5 to 69.3
Puakea will be the second course in our Hawaii 2018 Kauai Golf Classic – a well rated and testing layout. The late Robin Nelson, a founding member of Nelson & Haworth Golf Course Architects, designed Puakea. Along with Puakea, Nelson has his name on many courses in the Hawaiian Islands and South East Asia including the Mauna Lani, North & South courses, the original Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore and the Bali Golf & Country Club.
Puakea is shadowed by Mount Haupu, and plays through deep ravines, crossing mountain-fed streams and has sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Puakea is a tree-lined open parkland style course, with undulating terrain. The course is surrounded by both residential and wooded open countryside. Built on the site of an old sugar cane, Puakea covers more than 200 acres of historic property.
Pukaea has been named in the Top 10 by USA Sports Illustrated and as high as 7th in top Hawaiian courses, by Golfweek.
The Ocean Course @ Hokuala
Yardages from 7120 to 5377
Slope from 76.1 to 72.4
This is the arguably the best course on Kauai - designed by none other than - Jack Nicklaus. Known previously as Kauai Lagoons Golf Club, the Hokuala layout originally featured 3 x nine holes. Marriott who owned the course prior to 1988 sold it to a Hawaiian developer who renamed it the Ocean Course @ Hokuala with a revised 18-hole layout.
All nines are tree-lined, mango and guava groves, and a typical risk and reward, Nicklaus challenge. MSN Travel has called the Ocean Course one of the twelve most beautiful courses in the world with its dramatic seaside cliffs.
Other awards and accolades include ‘Extraordinary to Perfection” by Zagat Survey, ‘Best in State, #9 in Hawaii’ by Golf Digest, ‘Best Course You Can Play #7 in Hawaii’ by Golfweek, ‘Most Underrated Golf Resort in Hawaii’ by Travel & Leisure Golf, and ‘Top 50 Resort Destinations’ by Golf World. And hot off the press, Hokuala has just been named North America’s Best Golf Course for 2017 (Dec 2017 World Golf Awards).
Princeville Makai Golf Club
Yardage from 7223 to 5458
Slope from 75.4 to 71.4
Our second Robert Trent Jones Jnr course in this series – and another beauty, for which we will have two rounds to finish the Hawaii 2018 Kauai Golf Classic, and our 5-course challenge!
Makai – meaning ‘towards the sea’ – was, in fact, Robert Trent Jones Jnr first ever solo design. Stunning views over the Pacific abound many fairways. What you play today is the result of an extensive $6 million renovation which was completed in 2010. The renovation has resulted in many international and national accolades and a stunning presentation of immaculate course layouts with 5 oceanfront holes.
Managed by Troon Golf, Princeville’s Makai course is currently rated by Golf Digest (2017 / 2018) as the 74th best course in all of the USA!
